If you're expecting a baby in Winnipeg, Manitoba, you have several birthing options to consider. Each setting offers unique benefits, and your choice will depend on your health, preferences, and the type of care you desire.

🏥 Hospital Births

Winnipeg has two main hospitals equipped for childbirth:

1. Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Women’s Hospital

  • Private Rooms: All labor and delivery rooms are private, featuring large windows and bathrooms with showers for pain management during labor.

Postpartum rooms are all automatically private, and there is no fee.

  • Comprehensive Care: Equipped with operating rooms for cesarean sections and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies requiring extra support.

2. St. Boniface Hospital

  • Private Rooms: All labor and delivery rooms are private, featuring large windows and spacious bathrooms with bathtubs and showers for pain management during labor.

Postpartum rooms are not automatically private. You may request a private or semi-private room for a fee. Some extended benefit providers will have coverage for this.

  • Comprehensive Care: Equipped with operating rooms for cesarean sections and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies requiring extra support.

Note: While water births aren't permitted in these hospitals, both facilities offer tubs and showers to aid in labor comfort.

🏡 Home Births

For those seeking a familiar and intimate environment, home births are an option for low-risk pregnancies under the care of registered midwives. Midwives provide comprehensive prenatal care, attend the birth, and offer postpartum support for six weeks.

🏠 Birth Centre: Ode’imin

Ode’imin is Winnipeg's free-standing birth centre, offering a home-like setting for low-risk pregnancies under midwifery care.

  • Comfortable Environment: Designed to be a safe and welcoming space for childbirth.

  • Midwifery Support: Care provided by Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) midwives.

Note: To birth at Ode’imin, you must be under the care of a WRHA midwife.

🤝 Choosing the Right Option

When deciding where to give birth, consider the following:

  • Medical Needs: High-risk pregnancies may require hospital facilities.

  • Personal Comfort: Some may prefer the familiarity of home or the specialized environment of a birth centre.

  • Availability of Midwives: Midwifery services are in high demand; early application is recommended.
